Job Description The Senior Facilities Engineer oversees the planning, operation, maintenance, and optimization of hospital infrastructure and critical building systems. The role ensures that all engineering functions support safe patient care, regulatory compliance, and uninterrupted clinical operations.
Hospital facility engineers are responsible for engineering support across design, construction, operations, and maintenance for hospital and off site properties.
Responsibilities
- Hospital Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance
- Manage preventive and corrective maintenance programs for critical hospital systems such as HVAC, electrical distribution, medical gases, chilled/hot water systems, and fire protection systems.
- Conduct facility inspections to identify issues and implement corrective actions to prevent disruption of clinical services; oversee routine and complex maintenance tasks to ensure safe hospital operations.
- Review and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and system diagrams to support troubleshooting and repairs of engineering systems.
- Regulatory Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with JCAHO/JCI, HFAP, OSHA, and other healthcare regulatory bodies governing safety, maintenance, and facility performance standards.
- Monitor safety practices and ensure engineering operations meet OSHA and other relevant guidelines, including emergency contingency operations.
- Project Management & Capital Planning
- Support construction, renovation, and equipment replacement projects within the hospital, ensuring safe execution with minimal disruption to patient care services.
- Assist in developing capital budgets, lifecycle analysis, and planning for replacement of aging infrastructure and facility upgrades.
- Coordinate with architects, consultants, and contractors to ensure technical and safety standards are met in all project phases.
- Contractor & Vendor Management
- Oversee tendering processes for maintenance contracts and evaluate contractor performance to ensure high‑quality service delivery.
- Coordinate with service providers for specialized technical tasks and ensure compliance with regulatory and hospital policies.
- Energy, Sustainability & System Optimization
- Monitor facility systems performance, energy usage, and implement improvement measures and sustainability programs.
- Recommend and implement efficiency enhancements in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems to reduce operational costs.
- Documentation, Reporting & CMMS Management
- Maintain detailed documentation of maintenance work, incidents, equipment performance, and facility modifications using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).
Prepare technical reports, compliance documentation, and routine facility operation summaries for leadership review.
Accountabilities
- Accountable for delivering hospital renovation, upgrade, and infrastructure projects with minimal disruption to patient care.
- Responsible for maintaining continuous operation and reliability of HVAC, electrical, medical gases, plumbing, and life safety systems.
- Ensure all engineering works comply with JCI, OSHAD, ADCD, and ICRA requirements and support SSMC’s Environment of Care standards.
- Ensure engineering activities are aligned with clinical workflows and departmental needs to support safe and effective patient care.
- Accountable for ensuring all contractors, consultants, and internal teams meet SSMC’s technical specifications and hospital safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate project files, risk registers, commissioning records, and technical reports.
- Provide accurate cost estimates, track project budgets, and support lifecycle planning for hospital infrastructure.
- Ensure contractors follow SSMC safety protocols, infection control requirements, and complete work to agreed standards and timelines.
- Provide rapid response to system failures or critical alarms to prevent disruptions to clinical services.
- Recommend and support improvements in energy efficiency, system performance, and long term infrastructure sustainability.

- Supervise contractors to ensure safe and compliant work.
- Respond to engineering emergencies and system failures.
- Recommend improvements for energy efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Facilities Engineering, or equivalent.
- Experience:
- 5 years of experience in facilities management, including hospital or healthcare engineering.
- Proven experience in a high acuity healthcare setting.
- Experience leading contractors, technical teams, and multi system troubleshooting.
- Certifications (Preferred):
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
- Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM)
- Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation Knowledge
- LEED Green Building Certification (Healthcare Facilities)
- Skills:
- Strong technical knowledge of Healthcare Engineering and life safety systems.
- Excellent communication, problem solving, and decision making skills.
- Proficiency with CMMS, building management systems (BMS), and analytics tools.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast paced hospital environment.
