Laboratory Microbiologist – Hospital

• Perform microbiological testing of clinical specimens (blood, urine, swabs, tissue, fluids) including culture, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility, fungal/viral/parasite work as needed.
• Carry out general laboratory technician duties: specimen reception and registration, sample centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, reagent preparation, cleaning and maintenance of common lab equipment.
• Ensure timely processing of specimens, proper specimen handling, acceptance/rejection criteria, and result reporting.
• Maintain calibration, preventive maintenance and QC of microbiology instruments (incubators, autoclaves, BSCs, microscopes) and general lab instrumentation (centrifuges, analyzers).
• Develop, validate and implement microbiology methods and participate in method verification/validation; also assist with routine lab procedures across other sections (haematology, biochemistry, etc) if needed.
• Participate in infection-prevention/antimicrobial-stewardship programmes, surveillance of hospital-acquired infections, liaise with clinical teams for microbiology results and interpretations.
• Supervise, train and support junior lab technicians and general laboratory staff in both microbiology and routine laboratory tasks.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory accreditation (e.g., ISO 15189, CAP or local equivalent), hospital policy, biosafety/infection control, waste disposal, and environmental health.
• Maintain laboratory information system (LIS) data entry, documentation, inventory of reagents/supplies, and ensure proper sample traceability.
• Support shift coverage and urgent sample processing (on-call as required) and perform other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
