Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist

Basic Function
Provides psychiatric care to adult, adolescent and child inpatients and outpatients with mental or psychological illnesses.
Performs psychiatric consultations and handles referrals from other physicians for adult, adolescent and child patients.
Engages in preventive care as part of an integrated mental health program of therapeutic and preventive medicine.
Scope
Works in Dhahran Health Center, but visits other JHAH
Facilities for consultation and treatment of psychiatric patients.
Shares patient workload with other psychiatrists within the service.
Receives general supervision from the Chief Psychiatrist, but works independently in his/her professional specialty and subsequently, making professional decisions, but seeking administrative approval where required. Participates in continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance programs.
Principal Contacts
Internal: Nurses and ancillary personnel providing care to psychiatric patients. Other physicians in the course of referral and consultation. Relatives of patients and other JHAH non-physician clinicians in conducting the duties of the position.
External: Occasional contacts with GAO, personnel, Saudi Arab Government authorities. Supervisors or teachers of patients. Coordinates unusual contacts with his supervisor to ensure consistency and proper procedure in handling of problems.
Principal Duties
Provides the full range of psychiatric diagnostic and treatment modalities to adult, adolescent and child patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, sharing the workload with the other psychiatrists within the service.
If (s)he has completed sub-specialty residency training in child psychiatry, (s)he also provides outpatient and inpatient treatment to children and adolescents.
Takes after-hours and weekends calls in rotation with other staff psychiatrists.
Responds to consultation requests from other services, received either directly or when on-call, by offering clinical advice or assuming full responsibility for the mental health care of the patient.
Contributes to the orientation of other JHAH physicians, other mental health personnel, social workers, nurses and other Medical Organization personnel in the early detection, recognition, management or referral of psychiatric cases.
Participates in the continuing medical education for physicians and nurses by providing in-service training. Journal Club presentations, presenting cases in ward rounds, and lecturing to JHAH units upon request.
Administers electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) under general anesthesia in the recovery room.
Participates in quality improvement programs.
Remains current with the professional
Education
- Graduate of approved medical school with a valid license to practice Medicine.
- Two years of adult and two years of child/adolescent psychiatric residency program approved by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, or an equivalent certifying body.
- Certification or eligibility for examination by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology or equivalent qualifications in both general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry.
Experience
At least 2 years as a full-time Psychiatrist, after training.
Certifications/Other requirements as applicable
- Fluency in both Arabic and English is required.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of medical ethics, with particular reference to the obligation to maintain the confidentiality of professional work; personality which inspires confidence and trust in patients; and adhere to Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Organization.
