Consultant Psychiatrist

A Consultant Psychiatrist is a senior medical specialist responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with complex mental health disorders. The role combines clinical expertise, leadership, and decision-making to ensure high-quality psychiatric care, often overseeing multidisciplinary teams and contributing to service development.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including medical and mental health assessments
• Diagnose a wide range of psychiatric disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders)
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including pharmacological and therapeutic interventions
• Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications safely and effectively
• Provide specialist consultation for complex or high-risk cases
• Lead and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings
• Supervise junior doctors, residents, and other mental health professionals
• Manage psychiatric emergencies and provide crisis intervention
• Ensure compliance with clinical governance, ethical standards, and legal regulations
• Maintain accurate and confidential patient records
• Participate in audits, research, and continuous quality improvement initiatives

Qualifications & Requirements

• Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
• Completion of specialist training in psychiatry
• Board certification / fellowship
• Valid DHA medical license and specialist registration
• Extensive 3 years clinical experience in psychiatry
