Job Description

A Freelance IT Infrastructure Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting an organization’s IT systems on a contract basis. This includes networks, servers, cloud platforms, security systems, and end-user environments.

They work independently or alongside internal IT teams to ensure systems are reliable, secure, and scalable.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1. Infrastructure Setup & Deployment

  • Install and configure servers (physical and virtual)
  • Set up networks (LAN/WAN, routers, switches, firewalls)
  • Deploy operating systems (Windows Server, Linux)
  • Configure virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V)

2. Network Management

  • Monitor network performance and uptime
  • Troubleshoot connectivity issues
  • Configure VPNs, DNS, DHCP, and routing
  • Optimize bandwidth and network security

3. Cloud & Systems Administration

  • Manage cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Migrate on-premise systems to cloud environments
  • Maintain backups and disaster recovery systems
  • Monitor system performance and availability

4. IT Security

  • Implement security policies and controls
  • Configure firewalls, antivirus, and endpoint protection
  • Perform vulnerability assessments and patch management
  • Ensure compliance with security standards

5. Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Provide L2/L3 support for infrastructure issues
  • Diagnose hardware/software failures
  • Resolve server downtime and outages quickly
  • Support remote users and distributed systems

6. Maintenance & Upgrades

  • Perform system updates and patching
  • Upgrade hardware/software as needed
  • Maintain asset inventory and documentation
  • Ensure systems remain scalable and efficient

7. Documentation & Reporting

  • Create system architecture diagrams
  • Document configurations and procedures
  • Provide reports on system health and incidents
  • Maintain logs and change records
