The Speech and Language Pathologist is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with speech, language, voice, communication, and swallowing disorders. The role plays a vital part in supporting long-term care patients, including those with neurological, developmental, and acquired conditions, to maximize their functional communication and swallowing abilities, thereby enhancing their quality of life.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and diagnose communication, speech, language, and swallowing disorders across all age groups; conduct bedside and instrumental swallowing assessments.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on patient needs, goals, and medical conditions; deliver evidence-based therapy for communication difficulties (e.g., aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, stuttering, voice disorders) and manage dysphagia.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (physicians, nurses, therapists, dietitians, psychologists) to ensure comprehensive care; participate in case conferences, family meetings, and care planning.
  • Educate and counsel patients, families, and caregivers on therapy goals, home programs, and communication strategies; support training of nursing staff and caregivers in managing communication and swallowing issues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and outcomes; ensure compliance with Bahrain health regulations, ethical standards, and hospital policies.
  • Engage in professional development by staying current with advances in speech-language pathology practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology / Speech Therapy from a recognized university.
  • Valid NHRA license (or eligibility) to practice in Bahrain.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Speech and Language Pathologist, preferably in hospital or long-term care settings; experience with adult neurological conditions (stroke, TBI, Parkinson’s, dementia) highly desirable.
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical reasoning abilities; commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous learning.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, and patience; ability to educate and support patients, caregivers, and staff effectively.
  • Collaborative team player in multidisciplinary environments.
