Purpose and Scope of the Job

The CCL Staff Nurse provides care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The CCL Staff Nurse is primarily responsible for professional performance and safe patient care. The role encompasses the effective delivery of pre-during-post procedures care through nursing assessment as appropriate and coordinates care for patients involving families, when applicable. It includes, but is not limited to, hemodynamic and cardiac monitoring, assisting physicians in procedures, administering emergency medications and management of patients with complex conditions. The CCL Staff Nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes in accordance with established DASH policies, procedures, guidelines, Professional Practice and standards of practice. Participates in PI projects, and collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired outcomes. Utilizes knowledge of human development stages, and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Abides by accreditation requirements and international standards. Supports the mission and vision of Dar Al Shifa Hospital (DASH) and the Nursing Department.

Main Duties and Responsibilities/Performance Standards

Provide evidence-based nursing practice aligned with people centered care concept:

  • Confirm patient identity by bracelet, chart, and verbally if applicable.
  • Welcome and escort patient to the procedure room.
  • Collect initial pertinent (physical, psychological, cultural, and educational needs) data using appropriate assessment techniques that provide the baseline for the plan of care.
  • Analyze the assessment data, derive nursing interventions, set priorities according to patient’s needs, following established physician's preference card and by direct communication with the doctors.
  • Involve the patient, significant others, and health care providers in the plan of care when appropriate.
  • Review the pre-procedure and pre-catheterization checklist.
  • Secure all needed documents in the medical record before procedure (i.e. informed consent, Insurance clearance and all other required demographic information).
  • Ensure all required data is complete, accurate and entered in Cathlab log books.
  • Communicate the necessary information to the appropriate physician.
  • Ensure all necessary equipment, supplies and instruments are available to start cases at the scheduled time.
  • Maintain professional interpersonal relationship with doctors and colleagues.
  • Initiate appropriate transfer plan and proper communication and endorsement.
  • Recognize subtle cues to anticipate potential problems.
  • Document all relevant data in the Cathlab nursing records according to hospital standards.
  • Ensure availability and maintenance of supplies and equipment needed for the unit and patient care.
  • Accountable for the use of patients’ and hospital’s resources.
  • Accountable for the patient, the organization, the profession and self.
  • Participate in quality initiatives and quality improvement activities for improving the unit standards of quality provided.
  • Show responsibility for participating in department level PI activities and disseminate to unit colleague.
  • Assume responsibility for meeting hospital required mandatory education, e.g. fire, safety, infection control and others.
  • Ensure quality and patient safety practices are followed
  • Provide or promotes patient and family- centered care. Promotes inclusive health by providing equitable and accessible care to patients and families with special needs.

Provide patient and family education by:

      • Assessing patient and family readiness and ability to learn.
      • Identifying learning needs and objectives.
      • Evaluating the teaching-learning process.
      • Documenting patient and family education.

Perform major functions pertinent to a Cardiac Cath - Staff Nurse:

      • Demonstrate necessary knowledge and therapeutic skills.
      • Abide by standards of care and practice.
      • Demonstrate competence in ACLS and BLS.
      • Competent in performing all procedures in CCL (angiography, angioplasty, PCI etc.)
      • Implement and monitor infection control measures and to report communicable infections
      • Administer thrombolytic and vasoactive medications as well as regular medications.
      • Deliver immediate pre and post procedure patient care.
      • Apply safety measures related to patient care.
      • Implement safe patient transfer and proper position (from and to the procedure table).
      • Operate all unit required equipment safely including Temporary pacemaker, cardiac monitor, ozone machine, Nucleoplasty machine, ECG machine, Radiofrequency Ablation and hemodynamic station.
      • Assist physicians with special procedures, including but not limited to, insertion of central line, pacemaker, cardio version, coronary angiogram and angioplasty, renal denervation, kyphoplasty, pericardiocentesis, epidurolysis…etc.
      • Monitor cardiac rhythm, detect arrhythmias, and manage accordingly.
      • Implement safety precaution measures as specified (PPE, Radiation …etc)
      • Enter all used consumables, supplies in hospital automated system for charging. (I CARE)
      • Participate and show responsibility for improving the unit standards of quality provided.
      • Maintain updated inventory of all unit supplies, stents, balloons, medications, catheters and other consumables.
      • Maintain proper records and replacement of all utilized catheters, stents, balloons, guide wires
      • Perform scrubbing, circulating, hemodynamic monitoring to ensure competence of all required activities.
      • Maintain adequate distance when passing a sterile field.
      • Report any break in aseptic technique with proper follow-up.
      • Open sterile supplies to field without contamination after verifying integrity, sterile indicators and dates.
      • Proper handling of specimens including correct labeling and specimens’ forms completion.
      • Perform proper starting and ending of a case through safe surgical checklist.
      • Assess patient condition upon transfer.
      • Arrange for patient transfer to proper post-op destination.
      • Give thorough, concise inter report to staff nurse taking over.
      • Provide emotional support and measures to alleviate patient fear and anxiety.
